National Goof Off Day

I’ve always been weird. As a little girl, everyone would look at me, tilt their head and say, “You’re weird!” Yep. I owned it. It never really bothered me. I knew I was weird, I embraced it. I still do. I’ve taught my daughters to embrace their genetic weirdness, too. Even my littles, who are not biologically mine, but have inherited my weirdness by general proximity.

When John first introduced me to his mother, she quickly took to calling me “Bubbles.” In her words, I “brought sunshine and silliness” to her life. I took it as a compliment. John, at first, didn’t join in with my silliness, although he loved a good practical joke, especially when they were aimed in my general direction. He enjoyed playing into my fears and obsessions, convincing me that I had contracted worms from eating brats that were undercooked, or always seeing how far he could push a joke until I finally figured out that he was kidding. He was usually very successful.

Over time, we Lohoffs seemed to perfect “goofing off”. We excelled at it. We brought “goofiness” or “weirdness” to everyday events and special occasions alike. Today is National Goof Off Day, and thought that I would share some proof of our goofiness over the years. Sadly, or happily (depending upon your perspective) it only took me a few minutes to find these examples in my photo collection online. There are many, many more in photo albums throughout the house.

A serious moment at the Butterfly Gardens.
Re-enacting the Mary Tyler Moore hat toss.
Classic Daddy photo-bomb!
Smile!!…. typical family photo.
Typical shopping trip.
Happy Birthday boat trip for Opa!
Family graduation photo. No time for seriousness.

Sadly, I noticed while looking for these photos, that there has been no silliness for over a year now. I know why.

I will keep on the look out for the return of “Goof Off Day” for my family.
