Food Truck Business Night – A Night of Great Food!
When I share pictures of things that I have done with my family on the road, people often ask me, “How do you always find these cool things to do?” I’m sure people are wondering about how I found out about the food truck business night, too!
Simple. Google! When I arrive at a destination, I often do a few simple google searches like “things to do in…” or “activities for families in…” or “things to see in…..” and I also go to the city’s chamber of commerce website which also tends to have a lot of leads for great activities.
I’m spending quite a bit of time in southern Milwaukee lately, so I did the same searches and one of the activities I immediately KNEW that my family had to do was visit the Traveling Food Truck Tour Series. And that’s exactly what I did. Once we arrived, I walked around, shopping for all of the foods that I new I would want to sample. I tend to order a lot of appetizers so that I can eat at several different food truck businesses and not be too full to try them all!
There were about 15 – 20 trucks at the event. And the variety was impressive! Falafels, South American food, BBQ, roasted corn, tiny donuts, grilled cheese, African food, arepas from Venezuela, burgers, subs, and much more! A family could easily go and find food to make every member of the family happy!
I started out with crab cakes from the Hidden Kitchen. If you put seafood on your menu, there’s a pretty good chance that I will buy it! The crab cakes were fabulous! The dip and lemon added the finishing touch, but these passed the test of a truly good crab cake by not needing the sauce! My daughter ordered a grilled cheese sandwich from Mr. P’s Grilled Cheese. They combined mozzarella with a mild cheddar and served the melty goodness with a tomato bisque soup. Even though it was over 80 degrees outside, the soup was wonderful!
Next we moved on to Roll MKE because my other daughter wanted a basic burger. The only problem was that Roll MKE doesn’t do basic! The burger Kady ended up eating was grilled to perfection, made with quality ingredients, and included bacon jam! Well, if you have a great burger to start – and you put bacon on it – it becomes amazing! Then, I went to Anytime Arepa, where the owner explained how this classic Venezuelan dish is made. I picked one with shredded beef, plantains, and avocado sauce. Can you say Yum? More, please!
The girls needed to have their tiny donuts, a tradition any time that you have the opportunity to watch the little pieces of dough bounce down the river of hot oil to be flipped automatically as they continue cooking. Classic goodness! Happy Dough Lucky serves them up with either powdered sugar or cinnamon and sugar.
I finished off my tour of the food truck businesses with a stop at an African food truck. They served Sambusas, something that I had never tried and was looking forward to. They were filled with beans, spices and cilantro and served with a sauce that had a slight kick to it. They were fantastic!
So, when you find yourself in a new town, be sure to google what events are going on and check the city’s chamber of commerce website for even more information. You never know what you may find!
