A PROVEN Way to Save Money On Groceries!

I have done a lot of travelling! A lot! On my healing trip around the USA there were I had 10 “MUST DO” Stops planned over a 13,800 mile trip, I needed a lot of groceries! After all, we were gone for 83 days! Before ever setting out on this trip, I had learned a trick to always save money – at any grocery store – even if I had never shopped there before, and I want to share that tip with you!

Save money while shopping at stores with loyalty card memberships.

Save Money at Stores With Loyalty Programs!

This tip will not work at WalMart or Costco – two places that I also shop in often while on the road, but it will work at Piggly Wiggly, Winn-Dixie, Pick ‘N Save, Food Lion, Jewel and any other grocery store chain that has a loyalty card program.

I have used this tip for years! Whether I’m in another town visiting family, for medical appointments, or living my RVing lifestyle, and this tip works EVERY TIME! Last night was the perfect example! And after my experience last night, I realized that I needed to share this money saving tip with you!

1. Go to a grocery store with a loyalty card program.

Find the local chains. Winn-Dixie, Kroger, Food Lion, Piggly Wiggly, and Pick N Save, are some examples. Typically they have a poster in the window showing their loyalty reward card, but you can always check online to make sure that they have one. You do NOT need to register for their program in order to save money on your groceries! And, who needs another plastic card that you may never be able to use again anyway? I sure don’t!

2. Shop as you would normally shop knowing that you will save money on your groceries!

Get the items that you need. Pay attention to the discounted items! If you purchase something that has a tag that reads, “price reduced for card holders,” put it in your cart knowing that you WILL get that savings!

Save money on groceries using the stores loyalty card, even if you don't have one.

3. At the checkout, ask them to use “the store’s card!”

This is where the magic happens! Part of every cashier’s routine is to ask if you have a loyalty card. As soon as they ask, I tell them that I am from out of town and that I don’t have this chain in my neighborhood. I then ask, “Can I use the store’s extra loyalty card?” Every store that I’ve been to has a spare card handy at every checkout for just this purpose. Most of the time, the cashier pleasantly grabs the store’s loyalty card and gives me the savings! Done!

But, last night this did not happen! I didn’t panic! The cashier explained that she was new and didn’t know what I was talking about. There was a line of customers behind me. She offered to get the manager, but I knew that I could take care of the situation without holding up the customers behind me in line!

4. If the cashier doesn’t know how to do this, don’t worry!

I checked out, paying full price, and immediately brought my receipt to the customer service desk. I explained to the worker that I had just checked out, that I was from out of town, and that I had asked to use the store’s loyalty reward card, but that the cashier didn’t know how to do that.

The customer service worker looked at the cashier I was talking about and said, “Oh, yes. She’s new.” And a few moments later I was refunded $32 of my total $96 grocery bill simply because I ASKED!

Normally, I don’t have to go to the customer service desk. Normally, the cashier knows how to give me the instant savings on my groceries. Now, I had a third of my money back to spend on something else!

5. Enjoy your savings!

Bring your groceries back to your campsite, your hotel, or wherever you are staying on the road and be proud – knowing that you saved money!
